In response to the absence of the West Wildwood Police Department’s chief of police, who is currently on a leave of absence pending retirement, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office has appointed a monitor to oversee operations at the department.
This move is aimed at ensuring continuity, maintaining public safety, and fostering accountability during this transition period, according to a news release.
Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland has appointed Detective Mark Weeks to play a crucial role in overseeing the department's operations during a period of leadership transition.
With his extensive background in law enforcement, particularly his experience as a retired major from the New Jersey State Police, Detective Weeks “is well-suited to provide the necessary guidance and ensure continuity within the department during this temporary vacancy,” the release stated.
His oversight will help maintain stability and integrity within the department until a permanent leadership solution is found.
“The appointment of Detective Weeks as a monitor is a proactive step to maintain the integrity of the West Wildwood Police Department and ensure that the community continues to receive the high level of service and professionalism they deserve,” Sutherland said. “His experience and dedication to law enforcement will provide invaluable support during this period of transition.”
As monitor, Weeks will oversee the day-to-day operations of the police department, ensuring that all personnel adhere to proper protocols and that the department continues to operate in the best interest of the community.
He will report directly to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, providing regular updates on the department’s operations.
