A Camden County teenager has been charged with weapons offenses for allegedly firing a gun near the Wildwood Boardwalk over the busy Fourth of July weekend.
Police did not release the name of the 17-year-old juvenile from Pennsauken. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and weapons offenses, according to a news release.
The incident began around 1 a.m. on July 5 when Wildwood police officers heard multiple gunshots near Cedar and Atlantic avenues close to the Boardwalk.
Police chased the suspect on foot on the Boardwalk after he was seen holding a handgun. While being pursued, the suspect discarded the gun on the Boardwalk, police said.
The crime scene was cordoned off while Wildwood police and the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department canvassed the area looking for the suspect.
Police recovered the gun and discovered that 16 of the handgun’s 17 bullets had been fired during the shooting. No one was injured, according to the release.
The suspect was caught by Wildwood police later that evening on July 5 at around 5:30 p.m. when he was seen on the Boardwalk near Spencer Avenue.
After he was arrested, the teenager was taken to the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
As part of the investigation, Wildwood police detained three other “persons of interest” who were seen on surveillance video. Police did not publicly identify the three others or say whether they will face charges in connection with the gunfire.
