Alec Bohm's turnaround after dismal April hasn't been talked about enough

Yes, Alec Bohm struggled mightily in April. Yes, that has shaped the narrative of his season up to this point.

But should Bohm's April still be shaping his narrative, even now?

The beginning of the year truly was dismal for Bohm. In 24 games in March and April, he went 25-for-113 (.221) with an OPS of just .526. For a player who was such an RBI machine last season – especially in April 2024, when he set a new franchise record for RBIs in that month with 28 – he tallied just eight. He hit no home runs.

14 games into the season, his OPS of .331 was dead last among all qualified hitters in Major League Baseball. Bohm was dropped all the way down to eighth in the lineup.

He definitely toppled off a pretty steep cliff, considering the fact that he was coming off a start in the 2024 All-Star Game.

But since the calendar turned to May, Bohm has looked like an entirely new hitter. He's gone 60-for-183, slashing .328/.372/.481 for an OPS of .853. He's hit seven home runs and racked up 28 RBIs across 48 games.

Now, that's what you'd expect from a third baseman on a World Series contender.

Bohm's 2024 season was effectively a tale of two halves. Pre- and post-All Star break defined his narrative; he was an entirely different player on either side of that week in July (due at least in part to a left hand strain). Bohm was benched in Game 2 of the NLDS, and his status with the Phillies for 2025 was a topic for much of the winter.

This year, he appears to be reversing that trajectory. He's worked his way back up the lineup to the three-hole, and when Bryce Harper comes back, Bohm will likely be hitting right in the middle of the order again.

Yet, while there was a lot of noise about his decline in the second half of 2024, not much has been said about his positive turnaround this year.

Even including March and April, here are Bohm's full-season statistics: he's hitting .287 (second on the Phillies) with a .729 OPS, seven home runs and 36 RBIs (third on the Phillies).

No matter how you look at it, that is undeniably an impressive turnaround considering where he started.

While he may not be the Phillies' permanent solution at third base, it's time to treat Alec Bohm as what he's proven himself to be: an above-average MLB hitter.
