Wildwood Police Chief Joseph M. Murphy has been officially recognized as a New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police Accredited Chief Executive-Chief of Police with an advanced designation.

“This prestigious accreditation reflects his unwavering commitment to excellence, leadership, and the highest professional standards in law enforcement,” the city said in a news release.

To earn this designation, Murphy met rigorous leadership and training benchmarks while demonstrating exceptional executive service, notably through his role on the New Jersey FBI National Academy Associates board, the release stated.

Over the past year, Murphy has played a pivotal role in strengthening public safety in Wildwood through his leadership and proactive measures. Working alongside city commissioners, he has enacted stricter curfews and a backpack ban, ensuring a safer environment for residents and visitors, the city said.

Additionally, he has worked with city commissioners to enhance security on the historic Wildwood Boardwalk, including the installation of bollards at key access points to prevent unauthorized vehicle entry, upgraded surveillance cameras, and improved lighting to enhance visibility and deter crime.

Beyond physical security improvements, Murphy has advanced the department’s professional standards by leading efforts toward accreditation for the first time in over a century. This process ensures that the Wildwood Police Department not only meets but exceeds best practices in law enforcement, according to the release.

Additionally, he has introduced strategic hiring initiatives to strengthen shift coverage, reduce overtime costs and prioritize officer well-being. By addressing staffing challenges and implementing forward-thinking policies, he “continues to enhance the effectiveness of the department while fostering a safer, more resilient Wildwood,” the release said.

“Chief Murphy is a tremendous asset to Wildwood,” Deputy Mayor and Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski said. “His leadership, dedication, and vision have strengthened our police department and enhanced public safety in our community. His work ensures that Wildwood remains a safe and welcoming city for residents and visitors.”
