A Cape May County man has been sentenced to eight years in state prison for assaulting his then-pregnant fiancee, authorities said.
John P. Linnington, 33, of Cape May, was sentenced May 16 after pleading guilty in March to attempted murder and aggravated assault on a domestic violence victim by strangulation, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced.
“The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office will always pursue and prosecute perpetrators of Domestic Violence to the fullest extent of the law to ensure victims receive justice,” Sutherland said in a news release.
Sutherland acknowledged the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and Senior Assistant Prosecutor Bryna Batten for their work in securing Linnington’s conviction.
Linnington was initially charged on April 11, 2022, and then indicted on October 17, 2023, as a result of an investigation conducted by detectives from the Special Victims Unit after it was reported he had committed multiple acts of domestic violence against his then-pregnant fiancee, according to the news release.
He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury to eight years in prison subject to the terms of the No Early Release Act. He will also have to serve five years of supervised probation and have no contact with the victim after he is released.
