Two World War II veterans who are now centenarians were honored during Cape May County’s Veterans Day observance.

County Commissioner Bob Barr, county liaison for Veterans Affairs, bestowed special recognition to Russ Stetser, 103, and John Finiello  Sr., 100, during the ceremony Tuesday. Stetser and Finiello both served with the U.S. Navy during the war.

Barr and other officials noted that the Veterans Day event reflects Cape May County’s deep respect for its veteran community and its ongoing investment in programs and facilities that serve them.

“Cape May County will always stand with its veterans,” Barr said. “From our Veterans Cemetery to our transportation programs and many outreach services, we are proud to honor their service not just on Veterans Day, but every day of the year.”

The ceremony brought together veterans, their families, local officials and community members to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

Attendees gathered indoors, at the Public Safety Training Gymnasium on Justice Way in Cape May Court House, away from the bitter cold weather Tuesday.

County Commission Director Leonard Desiderio thanked all who served in the military while reaffirming the county’s commitment to supporting veterans year-round.

“Veterans Day reminds us that freedom is never free,” Desiderio said. “It is our solemn duty to ensure that the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families are never forgotten.”

The county’s Division of Veterans Services assists veterans and their families with benefits enrollment, healthcare coordination, transportation and memorial support.

The county continues to enhance the Gerald M. Thornton Veterans Cemetery to provide a fitting place of rest and remembrance for those who served. The second phase of the cemetery’s beautification is expected to begin in early 2026.
