Outgoing Gov. Phil Murphy started the process to filling his successor's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mikie Sherrill resigned her 11 Congressional District seat effective Thursday, after winning the election for governor.
A writ of election signed by Murphy directs that a special primary election will be held Feb. 5, with a special general election on April 16.
There will be six days of in-person early voting for the special primary election, spanning Jan. 29 through Feb. 3, and nine days of in-person early voting for the special general election, spanning April 6 through April 14.
The writ states that nomination petitions for partisan candidates seeking a party nomination in the special primary election shall be filed by Dec. 1, 2025.
Primary candidates must have 500 valid signatures.
Direct nominations by petition for independent candidates for the special general election shall be filed no later than the date of the special primary election. Independent candidates need 250 valid signatures to appear on the general election ballot.
