The driver of a sedan was trapped inside and had to be removed from the wreckage following a fiery head-on collision with a jitney on Route 9 in Rio Grande.
Photos included in a Facebook post by the Rio Grande Fire Department showed the sedan completely destroyed. The jitney sustained extensive front damage from the violent crash Saturday at around 6 p.m.
Firefighters had to remove all four doors of the sedan and the roof in order to pull the driver from the wreckage, according to the Facebook post. The driver’s foot was trapped under the gas pedal and center console.
Later, the driver was flown by helicopter to a local hospital for treatment. Eight people in the jitney were treated for minor injuries, according to the Rio Grande Fire Department
“Great job working together to get the patient out quickly and efficiently,” the Facebook post said of police and fire crews rescuing the driver.
No names were immediately released for the victims of the crash.
