Port Republic actor said he would kill her before shooting, Galloway road rage victim says

Ernest Heinz (IMBD)

  • Crime-Courts

Ernest Heinz played the jury foreman in the 2011 movie "J. Edgar," according to IMDB.

Now, the Port Republic man will be on the other side of the courtroom, charged with first-degree attempted murder in an apparent road rage incident that ended with a woman shot and Stockton University on lockdown.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. Thursday on Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway Township, not far from the university campus.

Maritza Arias-Galva, 42, of Galloway Township, was shot in the face, suffering a gunshot wound that entered her upper nose and left side and exited on the right side, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Responding officers found Arias-Galva with visible wounds, including her right cheek swollen to the point that her right eye was almost closed, the affidavit states.

She was able to give police a description of her attacker and the white Honda SUV he was driving.

Arias-Galva told police the shooter was alone in the vehicle, despite an alert from Stockton saying police were looking for two suspects.

Stockton issued a shelter-in-place that lasted hours as the school's emergency alerts kept the public updated, and warned students not at the school to stay away.

Classes and events were canceled.

Arias-Galva was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus in Atlantic City, while the hospital's nearby Mainland Campus was put on lockdown.

She was in stable condition Friday.

Heinz, 46, has not yet had a court appearance. He is scheduled to have a detention hearing Wednesday.

Road rage threat

Arias-Galva told police she was driving north on South Pomona Road heading toward the White Horse Pike on the outside lane of travel, when she put on her turn signal to merge into the inside lane, where there was a white SUV.

The driver of that vehicle, later identified as Heinz, raced ahead of her and cut her off, she said, according to the affidavit.

Both of them then turned onto Jimmie Leeds Road, where Arias-Galva said she passed Heinz.

When they got to the light at Vera King Farris Drive, the entrance to Stockton, she said the SUV pulled up to her driver's side and called her a b---- and a motherf---er, and said that he would kill her, the affidavit reads.

He then pulled out a handgun that she described as small and black with possibly something red on it, and then fired one shot, striking her in the nose.

The search

The active investigation evolved rapidly from the description of the suspect vehicle, police said.

That included that the vehicle was registered to Jackie Heinz, the suspect's mother, leading to the Port Republic address where the her son lives.

A Sig Saurer .350 handgun was registered to Heinz's father, also Ernest Heinz, along with six others, the affidavit states.

No one was at the Port Republic address, but instead the suspect was arrested at Blue Heron Pines in Galloway Township, when Heinz and his mother came outside to where police were speaking with the father, the affidavit reads.

"The prompt and professional actions of our officers resulted in a quick apprehension of Mr. Heinz,” Chief Eric B. Hendrickson said. “We wish Ms. Aria-Galva a swift recovery, and we are here to support our community following this senseless incident.”

In addition to the first-degree charge, Heinz faces a second-degree aggravated assault charge, along with third-degree aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Heinz does not seem to have a criminal record. His only prior cases were two in 2002, when he was accused of violating a domestic violence restraining order that July and that Sept. 11, exactly 23 years before his arrest Thursday.

He was expected to appear via video for central judicial processing court Friday, but did not show up. His detention hearing is set for Wednesday.

Heinz has a page on the website Internet Movie Database, known as IMDB, where he is listed as an actor and producer.

He also has a YouTube channel, Being Ernest, where he has several videos of auditions from years ago, including playing Isaac Newton in the History Channel's "Nostradamus Effect."

Heinz is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
