Human remains found in Middle Township

  • Cape May County

Cape May County authorities are investigating the grisly discovery of human remains in a wooded area of Middle Township.

The skeletal remains and a skull are believed to be those of an adult, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland said in a news release Wednesday.

They were discovered Tuesday by a local resident who was walking in a wooded area in the Whitesboro section of Middle Township. The resident saw what appeared to be a human skull and immediately reported it to the Middle Township Police Department.

Following the report, investigators from the Middle Township Police Department, Lower Township Police Department, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, the Cape May County Land Search and Rescue Team and the New Jersey Department of Corrections Land Search and Rescue Team conducted a search of the surrounding area.

Human remains were recovered as a result of the search. At this time, a positive identification of the remains has not been made.

An investigation continues, but no threat to the public is considered at this time, Sutherland said. He plans to release additional information when it becomes available to authorities.

Sutherland is urging anyone with information regarding the investigation to submit an anonymous tip through the Prosecutor’s Office website at cmcpo.tips or by calling (609) 465-1135.
