Lower Township honored two police officers for saving the life of a man who was unconscious and struggling to breathe while lying in his driveway.

Police Chief Donald Vanaman presented the lifesaving awards to Patrolmen Nicholas Romantino and Anthony Micciche during a Township Council meeting Monday.

Romantino and Micciche were recognized for their “brave and heroic acts.”

“The recognition also serves as an opportunity for the community to come together in appreciation of the men and women who protect and serve,” the township said in a news release.

On March 18, 2025, at approximately 5:05 p.m., Romantino and Micciche responded to a call on Glencreek Road in the North Cape May section of Lower Township. When they arrived, they found an unconscious and unresponsive man lying in a driveway and struggling to breathe.

They immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR. They also used an automated external defibrillator to assist the man.

Their quick thinking, teamwork, and decisive actions helped stabilize the man before he was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Division, in Galloway Township for further treatment, according to the release.

During the Council meeting, Mayor Frank Sippel and the Lower Township Council congratulated both officers for their professionalism and ability to work through a high-stress situation that ultimately saved a life.

Sippel noted that Lower Township is proud of Romantino and Micciche and grateful for their efforts to help keep the community safe.
