North Wildwood will add an extra layer of beachfront protection by building a new bulkhead spanning about 750 feet long.

The bulkhead will stretch from the midpoint of 12th and 13th avenues to 15th Avenue. It will connect to other bulkheads already on the beach.

Mayor Salvatore T. Zampirri Sr. said the project will help to bolster the city’s shoreline protection following a series of storms that eroded the beach and dunes.

“Recent storms and tidal events have once again caused severe erosion to the beach berm and dune system in this area, placing the city at imminent risk of a dune breach and damage to city infrastructure,” Zampirri said in a statement Wednesday posted on North Wildwood’s Facebook page.

Construction on the 752-foot-long bulkhead is expected to begin next week and should be completed by Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the peak summer tourism season at the shore.

The city has received all approved regulatory permits from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to extend the existing bulkhead to this location, Zampirri said.

During construction, the beachfront bike path from 12th to 15th avenues may be closed to public access at various times.

Once installation of the new bulkhead is finished, beach access over the dune and bulkhead will be reinstated at each of the street-end access points.
